Tips for during your video job interview

"This is not the time to apply." Sure it is! Maybe you are just finding out that your job no longer suits you, or your job is on the line because of the Corona crisis. Only, the old skool applying for a job isn't in the cards right now, because joining each other for an interview is out of the question. No worries! Video calling via Zoom, Skype or Teams, for example, is a good alternative. But, this is probably new for you and therefore perhaps more exciting than usual. A little healthy tension before a job interview is okay, but too much is never good. That's why we'd like to help you with some tips to make your video job interview a little easier.

Check your gear

A clue this, but make sure your PC, laptop or tablet's camera is working properly. Is it not working or does the quality leave something to be desired? Then use your smartphone to conduct your video job interview.

Find out how the video tool works

Because having to figure it out on the spot not only makes you nervous, it also looks a little clumsy? The recruiter will probably send you an invitation to the video job interview. This will also tell you which system will be used. Check in advance how this system works, create an account and make a test call with a friend.

Provide a professional, tidy environment

And so that's not a cluttered bedroom. Make sure you're in a quiet, neutral space. Not only because it looks more professional but also because your conversation partner will not be distracted.

Think about your posture part 1

Although you see each other through a screen, it is decent to look at each other as much as possible. It may be uncomfortable, but try to look straight into the lens. Talking during a videocall with someone who is looking at the side, above or below the screen all the time is not pleasant. Chances are you will come across as uninterested or lax. And that is not your intention, we assume for the sake of convenience?

Think about your posture part 2

Yes you are comfortable at home, yes you are probably secretly wearing house socks instead of heels or neat lace-up shoes, and yes, you may even be wearing sweatpants under your neat blouse. But don't let this affect your posture! Adopt a professional posture; sit up straight, shoulders straight and your arms resting quietly on the table in front of you.

Last but not least

Prepare well, just as you would for a "normal" job interview. Good luck! Do you need more advice? Then contact us, we are happy to help!
